What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
To arrive at the end of my life, those final minutes, knowing I could have done something wonderful and yet did not.
Where would you like to live?
In any civilized country, surrouded by family who love me.
What is your idea of earthly happiness?
To awake in good health and fine spirits, and have the luxury of dividing my time between writing, work, books, movies, music family.
To what faults do you feel most indulgent?
I'm often inclined to be critical of others and, invariably, regret my nature, whether the targets are aware of it or not.
Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?
Hemingway's Santiago, the epitome of the hero: after eighty-four days of fruitless fishing, he travels far out to sea on a quest to break his dry spell and, on achieving his goal, comes to learn of it's unimportance next to what he learns about himself.
Who are your favorite characters in history?
A combination of writers and filmmakers who's talents flourished before my time: Edgar Allan Poe, Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Charles Chaplin, Frank Capra, Billy Wilder, and H.P. Lovecraft .
Who are your favorite heroines in real life?
My Mother.
Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?
The immediate one who comes to mind is Moll Flanders: wife, mother, thief, whore. I also like the woman who played Garp's Mother (I forget her name) in The World According to Garp
Your favorite painter?
My Grandad and Salvador DalĂ­.
Your favorite musician?
Jim Morrison and the partnership of Lennon and McCartney for their lyrics; the Rolling Stones and U2 for their melodies; Freddie Mercury for his performances.
The quality you most admire in a man?
Knowing when to do the right thing at the ring time for the greater good.
The quality you most admire in a woman?
The same as for a man.
Your favorite virtue?
If I have to name only one virture then it will be imagination.
Your favorite occupation?
If I had to choose only one, it would be reading.
Who would you have liked to be?
The person I imagined myself being when I was younger (I still may get there).
