What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?: To be lost within my own mind
Where would you like to live?: Where the past rests rather than haunts and the future is indistinguishable from the present; where I am unconscious of the passage of time
What is your idea of earthly happiness?: to glide between the moment of a perfect goal and the perfect word
To what faults do you feel most indulgent?: faults springing from emotion rather than thought
Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?: the heights of tennyson's thoughts when thinking of arthur; those whose world is more real than mine; those who brave the truth without showing bravery
Who are your favorite characters in history?: the briefest immortals (athletes); those who recognize their pedestal (mandela); those who live more than they write, but who write more than I live
Who are your favorite heroines in real life?: i have no real heroines, i have the characters of my dreams and the women of my books
Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?: none who i can embrace, why have i never found a written woman who silences me, to whom i williningly, unquestioningly, instinctually pay homage. have i ever come across such a man?
Your favorite painter?: picasso or matisse or monet. zim zum is my favorite painting, but only because it made true islands in the stream, which made true my grief, which made true my father
Your favorite musician?: beethoven
The quality you most admire in a man?: not seeing what they see
The quality you most admire in a woman?: not seeing what they see
Your favorite virtue?: not seeing what others see
Your favorite occupation?: reading, dreaming, writing
Who would you have liked to be?: my father, becasue my heart is still broken; otherwise, hemingway before the darkness, although perhaps the darkness was always there
Your most marked characteristic?: fear of my lack of genius, or rather, my lack of anything of merit to contribute and as a result, any justification for my life
What do you most value in your friends?: silence together; a perception of the depth of their love as deep as my inability to see why
What is your principle defect?: inabiliyt to see outside myself
What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?: to lose those i love, my mother, my father, michele
What would you like to be?: the person who i am desperate to believe i can be, or perhaps that i already am
What is your favorite color?: those which flash before my eyes before i see them, whose which i feel rather than see, and those which i cannot even bear to feel
What is your favorite flower?: those which i leave behind, untouched; a perception of the eternally blossoming flower, similar to an eternal love--similarly destructive, similarly false, similarly heartbreaking
What is your favorite bird?: the swallow
Who are your favorite prose writers?: thank you for the plural; hemingway, wharton, green, fitzgerald, tolstoy, balzac, waugh
Who are your favorite poets?: tennyson, dunne, bronte, browning, wordsworth, dickinson, yeats- always yeats - there are so many in passing
Who are your heroes in real life?: perhaps grier, perhaps jimmy; to have a hero is to commit to pain and to failure
Who are your favorite heroines of history?: those who have fought; mata hari, queen elizabeth
What are your favorite names?: they are named for people, and so tear as they build; perhaps Aeolia
What is it you most dislike?: the labyrinth of my mind
What historical figures do you most despise?: to condemn one is perhaps to condemn us all; to say such a thing is to lack the courage to do even that
What event in military history do you most admire?: the polish national team facing death rather than defeat
What natural gift would you most like to possess?: irresistable charm, strength of will, genius
How would you like to die?: perhaps not without fear, but i think without regret
What is your present state of mind?: resignation, with determination banging at the gates
