What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?: To be unwanted because of one's uselessness
Where would you like to live?: Almost everywhere/anywhere
What is your idea of earthly happiness?: Libraries, friends, family, and coffee
To what faults do you feel most indulgent?: Arrogance, when it is warranted
Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?: Those who act wholeheartedly and sincerely
Who are your favorite characters in history?: I admire John Adams, many more characters amuse me --
Who are your favorite heroines in real life?: Jane Austen, women writers, Sister Dianna Ortiz, those actively working to change the world.
Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?: I don't have too many heroes/ heroines in fiction -- simply because I know too much about them from my objective standpoint. But, I admire, still, those who act wholeheartedly and sincerely.
Your favorite painter?: Marc Chagall
Your favorite musician?: Mozart
The quality you most admire in a man?: Intelligence, moral compass
The quality you most admire in a woman?: Intelligence, moral compass
Your favorite virtue?: Same as Proust -- the universal ones, whatever that entails.
Your favorite occupation?: Reading, dreaming, writing, conversing
Who would you have liked to be?: I like being me.
Your most marked characteristic?: I haven't a clue
What do you most value in your friends?: Loyalty and humor
What is your principle defect?: Lack of understanding, swift (unwarranted) judgments, misunderstanding, my lack of grace
What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?: To not be able to love / to not love
What would you like to be?: Myself, but better.
What is your favorite color?: Azure
What is your favorite flower?: Roses
What is your favorite bird?: Sparrows
Who are your favorite prose writers?: Currently (and possibly for always) Antoine de Saint-Exupery and Jane Austen.
Who are your favorite poets?: Don't traffic often in poetry -- but John Donne makes me laugh.
Who are your heroes in real life?: The Japanese official who wrote thousands of visas for Jewish refugees during WWII. And others. (Real life and history are the same to me.)
Who are your favorite heroines of history?: Mary Seacole, Esther (from the Bible), Virginia Woolf.
What are your favorite names?: Ones no one else has.
What is it you most dislike?: My own worst qualities
What historical figures do you most despise?: So many -- those without regard for anyone else but themselves.
What event in military history do you most admire?: See response to "heroes in real life."
What natural gift would you most like to possess?: Grace and charm, intelligence and understanding.
How would you like to die?: Painlessly
What is your present state of mind?: Calm, tinged with a touch of boredom
What is your motto?: There but for the grace of God go I. (But I'm not religious.)
